The foundation tier of life purpose: timeless soul purpose

Travertines as a metaphor for tiers of purpose

Can you think of a task or activity (writing, listening, leading…) that you tend to do effortlessly and without much thought, but somehow often get complimented on, as if it were a gift?

If you thought of one, don’t shrug it off — this may well be a clue to an important part of your purpose!

In this article, we’re shifting away from the more concrete and obvious layer of life purpose (our role and contribution) to focus on a deeper and easy-to-miss aspect that actually forms the foundation of our purpose.

I call this layer the timeless soul purpose — because it doesn’t change from lifetime to lifetime! It just shows up through a different “filter” in every life.

This tier of purpose is not something most people think about or even know about. We tend to jump straight to: What am I supposed to do professionally, or How am I to serve in this life?

The timeless soul purpose is not about what we do for work or the role we play.

It's about HOW we are in the world due to our soul's design and experience.

It's a set of universal principles, core qualities, gifts or abilities that we possess on a soul level and that we carry into every lifetime.

It's the energy or essence that we bring into every experience.

It informs HOW we do what we do, and what we naturally and effortlessly excel at.

If you come from a monotheistic religious tradition, you might say, “This is how God made me”. If your worldview is more metaphysical, you might say, ”This is my soul's blueprint, or divine design, which I carry into every incarnation.” Or: “This is the work my soul does in the Universe across time and space.”

Let's give an example to feel into the difference between What we do and How we are.

Let's say, a part of your soul purpose, or essence, is the ability to hold space for others so they can heal or go through whatever process they need to go through.

There are countless ways in which that purpose can manifest into something concrete!

  • Maybe you're a psychotherapist, providing a safe and supportive space where a client can open up, and share, and process their trauma and emotions.

  • Maybe you're a kindergarten teacher who has infinite patience to just be there for the children, and listen, and let them be themselves.

  • Maybe you're a manager of a team at a tech company who everyone feels safe to go to with their issues, and who makes everyone feel seen and accepted.

  • Maybe you speak on stage and manage to create a magical atmosphere with your warm energy and presence, and everyone in the audience feels included and seen and feels like you're talking directly to them.

  • Maybe you're just that friend or family member who others always share their crazy personal drama with — because they trust you and feel safe and never judged.

But what are you doing in all those very different concrete roles? You're simply holding space. In the way that only someone with such a soul purpose can do.

What are some other examples of this foundational tier of purpose? Let's give a few:

  • To bring people together and build communities of any kind.

  • To bring joy and entertainment.

  • To have a clear vision and help others see the truth.

  • To create order or systems out of chaos.

  • To have a close connection with Source and help others strengthen their connection.

  • To be a leader.

  • To create.

And most likely you have more than one of such core qualities on a soul level!

If you’ve had an Akashic reading with me or another Soul Realignment practitioner, some of the above probably sounds familiar — that’s because in such readings, we typically access information about the soul level of our Being, and a big part of that is our soul-level gifts and purpose. :)

The timeless soul purpose tier does NOT prescribe any particular profession. At the same time, it's super important to consider it when choosing our career path or path of service!

We want to choose a path that would allow us to express those core energy principles, or soul gifts, most of the time.

Why?

If we pick something that doesn't allow for the core qualities to be expressed, we're going to have to work much harder to reach the same level of success. And let's be honest: we may get good at something through hard work and dedication, but we may never be brilliant at it. So why swim against the current if we can be effortlessly brilliant? :)

There are other considerations, such as: working against our core qualities can lead to chronic energy depletion.

(I want to credit one of my teachers, Andrea Hess, for this understanding of core soul qualities.)

You might ask: How is soul purpose relevant to this life's purpose?

Well, soul purpose is always a part of your purpose, in every lifetime. But that's not all, which is why we consider it as just one of the three tiers!

I do want to mention that this foundational tier of purpose is rarely prominent in the beginning of our journey, when we're young and just starting a career. And it's not the main thing to focus on during that time anyway. We'll talk about a typical journey through the tiers of purpose in a later article.

So how can YOU discover the foundational tier of your purpose?

I'll give a professional and a DIY option. :)

1) If you prefer having a guide:

You would want to work with someone who can access and understand your soul’s blueprint and history. That would be certain types of trained Akashic readers, or other practitioners who understand and can access that information, or who can get concrete and detailed answers from a Higher Being like your Higher Self.

There's not one specific thing I look for in the soul blueprint when I read for clients; it's a combination of “data points”, if you will, that reveals the purpose.

2) The DIY option, how to figure it out yourself:

Here's the question you would want to ask yourself:

What is the general activity or quality that:

  • everyone says I'm so good at (if you don't know, go ask folks and look for commonalities in the answers);

  • is easy and effortless for me, I don't even think about it, it's almost instinctual or second nature for me;

  • doesn't drain my energy when I do it or express it — it energizes me instead.

If you find something that meets all three criteria, you’re probably on the right track! And there can be more than one “right” answer, as your soul has more than one gift or quality.

One caveat: it can be harder to answer this question for those of us who grew up in a home or culture where we weren't allowed to be ourselves, were punished for our natural expressions, or if we for whatever reason learned to fit into a mold and be someone else.

In these cases, our true nature may be hidden, blocked, or suppressed, and it would be of benefit to work with a trusted practitioner or guide. (And it can be so healing and liberating for us to finally reconnect with our long-forgotten true nature. Speaking from personal experience here!)
