Holiday survival tips for empaths and sensitive souls

Besides being a busy, happy, exciting time, for sensitive souls holidays can also be a very overwhelming time.  Here are a few tips on how we can manage our energy during this time to avoid getting drained and overwhelmed.

You don't have to say yes to everything and go to every party you're invited to.  If you're an empath or otherwise energetically sensitive, attending big group events can be draining and destabilizing.  Pick ones that you really don't want to miss, and allow yourself to come up with an excuse for the rest. :)

• If you're going to an event, bring your own car so that you can sneak out as soon as you start feeling you've had enough of socializing.  You don't need to explain exactly why you're not staying longer: thank the host, hug your friends, say you need to run to take care of something, and take your leave, that's it!

• If you're very energetically sensitive and big events are overwhelming for you, try to take frequent short breaks during the course of the party - run to the restroom or step outside just for a couple of minutes every once in a while during the event.  This really helps us recharge, refocus and collect ourselves so that we can then emerge with more energy and ready to socialize for another hour or so.

• Don't let narcissistic characters or whoever you don't get along with get the best of you at events.  If you can't completely avoid them, keep interactions short and neutral.  Don't "bite" when they provoke you.  As tempting as it may be to hit back, if they get any reaction out of you, they've automatically won and you lost (your energy to them).  Keyword: BOUNDARIES.  If a person is nasty, provokes you, etc., they don't deserve your time and attention: wish them a pleasant evening and move on.

• Beware of characters at the party who don't appear malicious at all, but will drag you into lengthy conversations that you can't seem to get out of.  They will often complain about something in their life to evoke sympathy.  Those guys are a drain on your energy just like the previous kind.  It's not rude to say you have to run to the bathroom and remove yourself from that conversation!

• If you use crystals, make them work hard for you during this time!  Keep a piece of Rose Quartz around at family events to promote love, empathy, and forgiveness.  Keep a cluster Clear Quartz on the dinner table to promote family unity and harmony.  Wear a protective stone such as Black Tourmaline, Hematite, or Black Onyx when attending events to protect your energy from others.

Keep your bar low.  We all want to make the most elaborate dessert for that potluck neighborhood party, but if it's going to take a full day of working in the kitchen and you're already tired from other responsibilities, it's OK to offer to just get the wine and apple cider this time!  (In fact, that's what I'm doing this year!)

Delegate!  Your spouse and kids can surely run to the grocery store for you or help vacuum the house while you're cooking.  Sometimes we forget to ask for help and then get burned out.

• Remember self-care.  Got presents for everyone?  Don't forget one for yourself.  Been busy all day preparing for the holidays?  You deserve half an hour alone with a cup of hot cocoa and a good book.  After all, you'll be in a better mood and more energetic after recharging your batteries.

• And remember to check in with yourself from time to time to make sure you're not taking on more than you can handle and that you're getting enough time to rest and recharge.  Be selective around what you spend your energy on and who you spend your time with.

I hope everyone has a wonderful, happy, and relaxing time during this holiday season!
